Overall Rating
Price: £34,840 | For: The 3 Series saloon remains the best compact executive to drive, although the Mercedes C-Class runs it close. There's a superb engine line-up, with fuel economy and emissions levels that will beat most of the 3's rivals. Against: The boot isn't as well shaped as an Audi A4's. Prices are a little steep and M Sport cars have a firm ride. |

Performance
All engines for the 3 Series come with Efficient Dynamics energy-saving measures, so whichever you choose, it's among the class leaders for fuel economy and emissions. There are five petrol and five diesel engines, and performance ranges from capable to colossal. Our favourite is the 174bhp 320d, which is strong and smooth, with minimal running costs.
Handling
The 3 Series is the sharpest car to drive in its class. Sublime body control and tenacious grip give it poise through corners, while the steering is accurate and communicative. The firm-but-fair suspension makes you aware of low-speed bumps and coarse surfaces, but it's never uncomfortable.
Refinement
The 3 Series is a quiet car and makes a great long-distance cruiser. You can tell which fuel the diesel uses, but engine noise is always well isolated and you barely hear it once you're settled on the motorway. Road and suspension noise are subdued over even the worst road surfaces. Some wind can be heard at high speeds, though.
