Three peppy petrol engines are available – a 1.1-litre rated at 53bhp, a 59bhp 1.2 and a 99bhp 1.4 in the 100 HP range-topper. The 69bhp 1.3-litre turbodiesel is a better performer than the 1.1 and 1.2, with added motorway ability. Four-wheel-drive versions are available with the 1.2 petrol engine.

The Panda displays good body control. Most road imperfections are dealt with well, and the steering is responsive and well weighted. The 4WD model retains these fine road manners while performing surprisingly well off-road, too. The 100HP has sharper handling.

Most engines become rather noisy when worked hard, although the 100HP is more refined and the diesel is quieter than many rivals, especially around town. Wind- and road noise become increasingly insistent as speeds rise, but overall noise levels aren’t bad.

Prices are highly competitive when compared with the Panda’s supermini rivals and residual values are respectable. Decent fuel economy, modest emissions and low insurance groupings mean the Panda is cheap to run, even the 100HP range-topper.

Most of the plastics and fabrics used in the interior are of reasonable quality and appear well put together. The body’s shut-lines are fairly tight, while doors, switchgear and gearshift all have a solid feel.

All models come with twin front airbags as standard, while side airbags and curtain airbags are optional on higher spec models. Anti-lock brakes with electronic distribution of stopping power are standard, while stability control is also offered as an option, a first in this class of car.

The Panda’s funky, airy cabin features a large centre console that keeps most controls – including the gearlever – within easy reach, but taller drivers may find the lever digs into their left leg. The raised driving position isn’t to all tastes, either, but it does ensure a good view out. A height-adjustable steering wheel is standard, but only top-spec cars have driver’s seat height adjustment.

The Panda’s tall body ensures plenty of headroom all round and there’s reasonable legroom up front. Legroom is tight in the back, however, despite the upright seating position. The Panda’s boot is small but well-shaped. On basic models the rear seat folds as one; a seat that splits and slides is an option on mid-spec cars, while top-spec models split as standard and slide as an option.

Entry-level Active models come with electric front windows, central locking, power steering and a radio-cassette as standard. You have to step up to Dynamic trim to add remote locking, body-coloured bumpers and a CD player, or Dynamic Aircon to add – you guessed it – air-conditioning. Eleganza features climate control, alloy wheels and roof bars. The 100HP range-topper has unique 15-inch alloys, a bodykit, and front foglamps.
