Overall Rating
Price: £28,762 | For: The ride is comfortable, most engines are strong and, because the SLK is so desirable, it holds its value well. The folding metal roof is a real attraction, too.
Against: The SLK is a costly car to buy and it isn't as much fun as a BMW Z4. The cabin materials are rather unappealing and the brilliant Airscarf system costs extra. |

Performance
The entry-level SLK 200K makes do with a supercharged 181bhp four-cylinder engine, but it's brisk enough if you rev it hard. For more grunt, there are two V6 petrols; the 280 has a 228bhp 3.0, while the 350 has a 301bhp 3.5. If that's still not enough, the SLK55 AMG has a 5.5-litre V8 with 355bhp to call on.
Handling
The SLK is good at soaking up bumps when the roof is in place. However, there's a significant decrease in body rigidity when you drop the top, so the suspension doesn't work as effectively, and rough roads are more unsettling. It grips well through bends, but isn't as much fun as a BMW Z4 or Porsche Boxster because the steering is rather vague.
Refinement
The SLK is impressively quiet when the roof is in place, with little wind or road noise to irritate. There's not too much buffeting with the roof down either, especially with the optional wind-blocker in place. The 200K's engine is wheezy when worked, but the larger-engined models are generally easy on the ear.
