The lead-in 911 Carrera has a 341bhp 3.6-litre flat-six, while the Carrera S gets a 380bhp 3.8. Both are available with four-wheel drive and the seven-speed PDK sequential-shift gearbox, and deliver explosive performance: the slightly faster S blasts from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds and tops out at 188mph. Not fast enough? Try the 429bhp GT3, the four-wheel drive 493bhp Turbo or the fastest-ever 911, the 530bhp GT2.

All models provide astonishing grip, roll-free body control and lightning-quick changes of direction. The S also comes with adaptive sports suspension, which can be switched between comfort and sports modes at the touch of a button. The Targa version has slightly softer suspension, but it doesn't spoil the drive. On the other hand, the GT cars are very firm and track-biased.

The engines love to be worked hard, and a fantastic howling exhaust rasp accompanies every push of the throttle. Some suspension thud is audible over rougher surfaces and wind and road noise are both noticeable at higher speeds. However, no amount of noise can detract from the exhilaration of driving the 911.

Every 911 is equipped with twin front, side and curtain airbags and a sophisticated stability control system. Security research centre Thatcham awarded it a maximum five-star rating for resisting drive-away theft and four stars for resisting forced entry.

The superbly supportive seats adjust in every direction, and the steering wheel adjusts for height and reach. There's plenty of space for people of all sizes, too. However, the switches on the dashboard are too small and too great in number. It's also difficult to hit the central touch-screen when on the move.

By supercar standards, the 911 makes a practical everyday proposition. Space in the front is excellent, although the rear seats are next to useless for adults. There are plenty of cubbyholes for storage and a good-sized glovebox. The rear-mounted engine means the boot is beneath the bonnet, but although it's deep, the opening is narrow and there's only just enough space for a couple of overnight bags.

Every 911 comes with climate control, alloy wheels, remote central locking, electric windows, heated mirrors and leather upholstery, but you'll pay extra for electric seat adjustment unless you buy the Turbo version.
