The hot Clio's 2.0-litre engine delivers a searing 197bhp at a dizzy 7250rpm, meaning straight-line speed is extremely rapid, with 62mph coming up in just 6.9secs and a top speed exceeding 130mph. Mind you, you'll need to thrash the engine to match those figures, as most of the action doesn't kick in until beyond 5000rpm.

The Clio lays its power down extremely effectively with minimal front-wheel scrabble, and little steering-wheel tug when sprinting off the mark. Equally, the ride is smooth, there's little body roll and masses of grip, so high-speed corners can be tackled with supreme confidence. It's just a shame, then, that given these attributes, the steering doesn't provide more feel and has an annoyingly strong self-centre action.

Make the most of the performance and you'll certainly know about it, as the engine note bawls when it's close to the red line. That's fine if you're in the mood, but at motorway cruising speeds a constant, irritating drone is ever-present.

The Clio is no longer a cheap hot hatch; it now commands the same type of list price tag as a Mini Cooper S, so make sure you negotiate a decent discount. Renault claims an average fuel consumption figure of 31.7mpg, but you'll do well to get anywhere near that figure if you're an enthusiastic driver.

Inside, other than the usual hot hatch accoutrements, such as sports seats, a leather-bound steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a splash of silver trim, the Renaultsport 197 is similar to the rest of the Clio range - that's no bad thing, because the Clio is as good as small cars come.

The Clio scored a maximum five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. Extremely powerful brakes, complete with anti-lock and full stability control, are standard in the Renaultsport, as are a full compliment of airbags, including anti-submarining airbags in the base of the front seat cushion. Deadlocks and anti-drill locks are fitted to serve as barriers to thieves.

The driving position and layout are a vast improvement on hot Clios of old, with a lower seat and wider range of adjustment, while the sports steering wheel adjusts for height and reach. Although some of the controls are a bit small, the overall look is smart and stylish. Sporty touches include a rev counter with numerals that increase in size the closer you get to the red line, and keyless entry and starter button are standard.

The latest superminis are far bigger than their compact predecessors and the Clio is no exception, so four adults will easily fit in, and access to the rear is excellent. There's even a good-sized boot and 60/40-split rear seats to boost capacity, although there is a high boot lip to heave things over.

Although the emphasis is on sportiness, this is no stripped out race replica. Air-conditioning, height adjustable sports seats with lumbar support, rake and reach adjustable steering, electric windows, cruise control and a speed limiter are all standard.
